Writing a carta do leitor for the Celpe-Bras
A carta do leitor is a letter from a reader to a newspaper or magazine, written to be published, that responds to something the publication ran. In the Celpe-Bras it comes up most with a written text as input: an article or a column you have to answer, taking a position. 4 of the 40 written tasks since 2020 have asked for one.

What the exam asks for
The task gives you an article or a column and asks you to write to the publication's readers: to agree or disagree with the author, give your opinion on a proposal, or add your experience to the debate. What the markers look for first is a clear position on what the text said, argued for the publication's readers.
Two things make it a carta do leitor rather than an essay: it refers to the text it responds to (its title, its author, where it appeared), and it's written to be read by everyone who reads the publication, not to the author alone. Summarising the article without giving your view is the most common way to miss the task.
The moves a reader's letter needs
Short letters, so every move gets a sentence or a short paragraph.
1. A title (optional)
Many publications give letters a short headline; a title that states your position helps.
Bibliotecas não são nostalgia
2. The reference
Which text you're responding to: its title, author and where or when it appeared.
3. Your position
Clearly, near the start: do you agree, disagree, or agree in part?
4. Arguments
Two or three reasons, each developed: an example, a fact from the text, your own experience. Answer the author's own arguments.
5. Conclusion
Restate your position or say what should be done.
6. Signature
Your name and city, as letters are published; your occupation if it gives your view weight.

Register
Formal and public: you're writing for everyone who reads the paper. No greeting to a friend; you can open with Prezados editores or go straight into the letter, which is what most published letters do. Refer to the author by name (o colunista Ricardo Meireles), not as você.
Opinion can be firm without being rude. Disagree with the argument, not the person: discordo do argumento de que… rather than attacking the author.

Regina Alves, aposentada, Centro- The first paragraph names the article, says who the writer is and gives her position, with its limit, at once.
- Each argument paragraph has one job: the first supports the plan with a fact from the article, the second sets the condition.
- The conclusion turns the position into a proposal, and the title already says it.
Sandra Lima, professora, Recife (PE)- "Prezados editores" is a common opening; the letter is still written for all the magazine's readers.
- The letter answers the columnist with his own figures, which shows the input used selectively and turned against his argument.
- The signature gives the writer's job, which is the source of her authority on the topic.
What costs marks
- Summarising the article without taking a position: the commonest way to miss the task.
- Not saying which text you're responding to.
- Writing to the author as "você", like a private letter, rather than to the publication's readers.
- Arguments without development: three opinions in three sentences.
- Copying the article's sentences instead of using its information and answering its arguments.
