The most common Brazilian Portuguese words

The basic Portuguese words you'll hear every day, ranked by how often Brazilians actually use them, with what each one means and a sentence to show it in use. This vocabulary list is Brazilian Portuguese, built from modern speech rather than old books, and the common Portuguese words at the top go a long way: the first 1,000 make up about 80% of everything said in the subtitles the list comes from.

Every word on this page and four thousand more, as a spreadsheet: rank, word, part of speech, meaning, and the example sentence in Portuguese and English. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets and Numbers, and imports into Anki, Quizlet and most flashcard apps.

The list is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0. The ranking is built from the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles of OpenSubtitles (FrequencyWords by Hermit Dave, CC BY-SA 4.0), the meanings from Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0), and the example sentences were written for learners by Verbeto and are still being reviewed. None is a quotation.

How many words do you need?

Fewer than you might think to get going. In the Brazilian film and television subtitles this list is built from, the 100 most common words make up about 58% of everything said, the top 1,000 about 80%, and the top 5,000 about 88%.

As a rough guide: around 1,000 words carry you through everyday conversation; 2,000–3,000 let you read most of a modern novel with some help; literature, the news and specialist subjects keep asking for more. The last few per cent of words on a page are the rare ones, and they are where the meaning often is — which is why reading with help on every word beats waiting until you know them all.

Portuguese itself has hundreds of thousands of words, counting every technical term, but nobody knows them all; an educated native speaker recognises tens of thousands.

Learn them in real sentences

A list is a good map and a poor teacher. A word learned alone, from a list or a flashcard, is easy to recognise and hard to use, because you never met it doing anything. Meet the same word in a story — who said it, to whom, what happened next — and it sticks.

That's what Verbeto is for. You read real Brazilian books and stories at your level, tap any word you don't know for its meaning in that sentence, and it becomes a card you review later, with the sentence you found it in.

Questions

What are the most common Portuguese words?

Small grammar words come first, as in every language: que (that, what), não (no, not), o and a (the), de (of), and the verbs estar, ir, ser and ter. The first nouns are words like coisa (thing), dia (day), tempo (time), casa (house) and vez (time, occasion).

How many Portuguese words should I learn first?

Start with the top 250, then the top 1,000. The first 1,000 make up about 80% of the words in everyday Brazilian speech, which is enough to follow simple conversations and start reading easy stories, where the rest are best learned.

Is this list Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Brazilian. The ranking comes from Brazilian subtitles, the meanings are the ones Brazilians use (cara as “guy”, legal as “cool”), and the example sentences are written the way Brazilians speak, with você and a gente. Most of the words are the same in Portugal, but their order and some meanings differ.

Where does the ranking come from?

From FrequencyWords, an open list of how often each word appears in the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles of OpenSubtitles — modern, everyday speech. The forms of each word are counted together (é, era and foi all count for ser), grammar words are kept as they are, and names, interjections and rude words are left out.

Can I use this list in Anki or Quizlet?

Yes. The free Anki deck has all 5,000 words, or just the top 1,000 to 4,000 if you prefer, ready to import. The CSV, at the same sizes, imports into Quizlet, Anki and most other flashcard apps: choose comma as the separator and map the word and meaning columns to the two sides of the card.
