About vir

Irregular, and easy to mix up with ver: venho, vem, vimos, vêm in the present, vim and veio in the past, vinha in the imperfect. Vimos is both “we come” (vir) and “we saw” (ver). The plural vêm carries a circumflex; the singular vem does not. The participle and the gerund are the same word, vindo. Vir is movement towards the speaker and ir is movement away: vem cá! is “come here!”. Convir, intervir and provir conjugate like it: convém, “it's advisable”.

Examples

  • Você vem à festa no sábado?

Are you coming to the party on Saturday?

  • Ela veio de São Paulo de ônibus.

She came from São Paulo by bus.

  • Vem cá, quero te mostrar uma coisa.

Come here, I want to show you something.
