The Brazilian keyboard layout (ABNT2)

The Brazilian ABNT2 keyboard layoutQWERTY rows. The acute accent key (´, with Shift `) is to the right of P. Ç has its own key to the right of L, and the tilde key (~, with Shift ^) is to the right of Ç. An extra backslash key sits between the left Shift and Z."'!1@2#3$4%5¨6&7*8(9)0_-+=⌫TabQWERTYUIOP`´{[CapsASDFGHJKLÇ^~}]EnterShift|\ZXCVBNM<,>.:;?/Shift
In red: ´ ` to the right of P, Ç to the right of L, and ~ ^ beside it. Shifted characters are shown above.

Computers sold in Brazil use the ABNT2 layout. It is QWERTY, like an American keyboard, with ç on its own key to the right of L, and the accents on dead keys: ´ to the right of P (with Shift, `), and ~ to the right of Ç (with Shift, ^). Press the accent, let go, then type the letter: ~ then a gives ã, Shift + ~ then e gives ê.

A laptop bought in Brazil also has an extra key between the left Shift and Z (\ and |), a / and ? key next to the right Shift, and an AltGr key for symbols. Shift + 6 is ¨, the dead key for the diaeresis that Portuguese no longer uses.

What do the accents mean?

The acute (é) marks a stressed, open vowel and the circumflex (ê) a stressed, closed one; the tilde (ã, õ) makes a vowel nasal, the grave (à) marks a + a run together, and the cedilla (ç) gives c an s sound before a, o and u. Each one can change a word: avó is grandmother, avô grandfather.
