How Brazilians use them

Generous with compliments

Brazilians compliment often and warmly, on looks, food and homes. Taking a compliment too readily can sound vain, so the polite reply deflects, Imagina! or Que isso!, and often returns it: Você que é!

Diminutives add warmth

The -inho ending softens a compliment and makes it affectionate: bonitinho, lindinha, que gracinha. Bonitinho can also mean “cute, nothing more”, so lindo is the safer word for someone dressed up.

Careful with gostoso

Gostoso means delicious, and Que bolo gostoso! is a lovely thing to say to a cook. Said about a person, gostoso or gostosa is sexual, so keep it for food.
