The deck's bands and tags

Every card is tagged with its band and its part of speech, so you can study in order. Start with verbeto::band::0001-0250 — those words alone are a large share of everyday speech — then work down. To study one band, use Anki's Custom Study › Study by card state or tag, or search the browser for the tag.

Using Quizlet or another app?

The list is also a CSV file, at the same sizes: rank, word, part of speech, meaning and the example sentence in Portuguese and English. Quizlet, Anki's own importer and most flashcard apps read it: choose comma as the separator and map the word and meaning to the two sides.

The list is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0. The ranking is built from the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles of OpenSubtitles (FrequencyWords by Hermit Dave, CC BY-SA 4.0), the meanings from Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0), and the example sentences were written for learners by Verbeto and are still being reviewed. None is a quotation.

Learn them in real sentences

A list is a good map and a poor teacher. A word learned alone, from a list or a flashcard, is easy to recognise and hard to use, because you never met it doing anything. Meet the same word in a story — who said it, to whom, what happened next — and it sticks.

That's what Verbeto is for. You read real Brazilian books and stories at your level, tap any word you don't know for its meaning in that sentence, and it becomes a card you review later, with the sentence you found it in.

Questions

Is the deck free?

Yes, completely. No sign-up, no email, no trial. Download it and it's yours.

How many words should I download?

If you're starting out, the top 1,000: they make up about 80% of the words in everyday Brazilian speech. Every size is the same deck, so when you're ready for more, import a bigger one: the new words are added, and the cards you've studied keep their progress.

Is it Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Brazilian. The words are ranked by how often Brazilians use them, the meanings and examples are Brazilian, and the audio is read in a Brazilian Portuguese voice.

How do I import it?

On a computer, open Anki and choose File › Import, or double-click the .apkg file. On a phone, open the file with AnkiDroid or AnkiMobile, or import on a computer and sync through a free AnkiWeb account.

Does it have audio?

Not yet. This version has the words, meanings and examples; a version with every word and example spoken in a Brazilian voice is on its way, and importing it will update the cards you already have without losing your progress.

Can I share or change it?

Yes. The deck is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, like the sources it is built from (Wiktionary's meanings and the FrequencyWords ranking). Share it, change it, build on it — keep the credit, and share what you make under the same licence.
