How Brazilians use them

Brazil and Portugal at home

Several everyday house words differ: Brazil's banheiro is Portugal's casa de banho, the geladeira is a frigorífico, the chuveiro a duche, and a prédio an edifício. Brazilians understand the Portuguese words, but rarely use them.

Ligar and desligar

To turn things on and off, Brazilians use ligar and desligar for almost everything: ligar a TV, desligar o ventilador. For lights, acender and apagar are common too: apaga a luz.

Em casa, para casa

Without an article, casa means home: estou em casa (I'm at home), vou para casa (I'm going home). With one it's a particular house: a casa da minha avó.
