How Brazilians use them

Months are lowercase

Write janeiro, not Janeiro: the capital in Rio de Janeiro is there because it's a name. Brazil has always written months in lowercase, and Portugal switched with the 1990 spelling agreement. They take no article: em janeiro, in January.

Saying the date

The day comes first, with dia, then de and the month: dia 5 de outubro, and with the year, 5 de outubro de 2026. The first of the month is the one ordinal, primeiro de maio; every other day is a plain number, dois de maio.

Writing the date

Day first, then month: 05/10/2026 is the 5th of October, not May 10th. Forms ask for DD/MM/AAAA, where AAAA stands for ano.

The seasons are reversed

Most of Brazil is south of the equator, so summer runs from December to March and Christmas is hot. In the north and northeast the four seasons barely show, and inverno often just means the rainy season.
