Rapunzel

Era uma vez um homem e uma mulher. Atrás da casa tem o jardim de uma bruxa.

A mulher vê uma planta no jardim: rapunzel.

— Eu quero essa planta! Sem ela, eu vou morrer!

O homem pega a planta. Mas a bruxa está lá!

— Desculpa! Minha mulher está doente.

— Leva. Mas o bebê vai ser meu.

Eu cuido dele como uma mãe. Com medo, o homem diz sim.

A menina nasce. A bruxa leva a menina. O nome dela: Rapunzel, como a planta. Rapunzel cresce. O cabelo dela é longo, cor de ouro. A bruxa coloca Rapunzel numa torre na floresta. A torre não tem porta. Todo dia, a bruxa grita:

— Rapunzel, Rapunzel, jogue suas tranças!

E a bruxa sobe pelo cabelo.

Sozinha, Rapunzel canta: lá, lá, lá… Um príncipe ouve a música. Ele vê a bruxa subir. De noite, ele grita igual:

— Rapunzel, Rapunzel, jogue suas tranças!

O príncipe sobe.

— Ah! Quem é você?

— Não tenha medo. Eu ouvi você cantar. Quer casar comigo?

— Sim!

O príncipe vem toda noite.

Um dia, Rapunzel pergunta para a bruxa:

— Por que você demora tanto? O príncipe sobe rapidinho!

— Um príncipe?!

A bruxa corta as tranças: tchac, tchac! E leva Rapunzel para longe.

De noite, o príncipe grita:

— Rapunzel, Rapunzel, jogue suas tranças!

A bruxa joga as tranças cortadas. Ele sobe.

— Você nunca mais vai ver Rapunzel!

Ele pula da torre e cai nos espinhos. Ele fica cego.

Ele anda por muitos anos. Então ele ouve: lá, lá, lá…

— Rapunzel!

Rapunzel corre e chora. Duas lágrimas caem nos olhos dele. Ele vê de novo!

Eles vão para a casa dele. O cabelo dela cresce de novo. Mas a casa nova tem porta!

About the fairy tale

The context, the author and the culture behind it.

Rapunzel is tale number 12 in the Grimm brothers' Kinder- und Hausmärchen. The brothers took it from a German story of 1790, itself a retelling of the French 'Persinette' (1698), where the craved plant is parsley; in Grimm it is rampion, a salad green called Rapunzel, and the girl is named after it. This retelling follows the Grimms' final text of 1857: the prince is blinded by the thorns and healed by Rapunzel's tears. In Brazil the sorceress is simply 'a bruxa', the call is 'Rapunzel, Rapunzel, jogue suas tranças!', and 'tchac, tchac' is the sound scissors make in Brazilian comics.
