Rumpelstiltskin

Ela chora.

Entra um homenzinho.

— Por que você está chorando?

— Eu não sei fiar!

— O que você me dá?

— O meu colar.

O homenzinho senta na roca. Zum, zum, zum! A palha vira ouro.

Mas o rei quer mais. Na segunda noite, o homenzinho volta.

— O que você me dá?

— O meu anel.

Zum, zum, zum!

Na terceira noite, o rei diz:

— Transforme tudo e você vai ser minha rainha.

O homenzinho volta.

— O que você me dá?

— Eu não tenho mais nada.

— Então me promete o seu primeiro filho.

A moça diz sim.

O homenzinho volta.

— Agora me dá o bebê!

— Não! Leva o ouro, mas deixa o meu bebê!

A rainha chora.

No terceiro dia, ele volta.

O homenzinho volta.

— Qual é o meu nome?

— Você se chama… Rumpelstiltskin?

— Quem te contou?! — grita ele.

Ele bate o pé no chão. Tum! O chão abre. O homenzinho cai e nunca mais volta. Agora todo mundo sabe o nome dele:

— Rumpelstiltskin!

About the fairy tale

The context, the author and the culture behind it.

Rumpelstiltskin (Rumpelstilzchen) is tale 55 in the Brothers Grimm's collection, first printed in 1812; this retelling follows their final text of 1857. Brazil knows it by the German name, and the three names the queen tries first, Gaspar, Melchior and Baltazar, are the Three Kings of the Brazilian presépio, which are also the Grimms' own. 'Foi o diabo que te contou!' is the Brazilian wording of the little man's famous cry: an idiom for 'how on earth did you find out', not a belief. 'Ficar com pena' is to feel sorry for someone; 'pegar no colo' is to take a child into your arms.
