Some common Portuguese verbs ending in -ir, -air and -uir don’t follow the regular patterns. Their forms change in different ways, so it’s worth learning each one.
Irregular -ir verbs
| Subject | pedir (to ask for) | ouvir (to hear) | dormir (to sleep) |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | peço | ouço | durmo |
| você | pede | ouve | dorme |
| ele / ela | pede | ouve | dorme |
| nós | pedimos | ouvimos | dormimos |
| vocês | pedem | ouvem | dormem |
| eles / elas | pedem | ouvem | dormem |
| Subject | subir (to go up) | fugir (to flee) | rir (to laugh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | subo | fujo | rio |
| você | sobe | foge | ri |
| ele / ela | sobe | foge | ri |
| nós | subimos | fugimos | rimos |
| vocês | sobem | fogem | riem |
| eles / elas | sobem | fogem | riem |
- Eu peço um café, por favor.I’ll have a coffee, please.
- Eu não ouço nada.I can’t hear anything.
- Eu durmo cedo.I go to sleep early.

Two other very common irregular verbs are ir (to go) and vir (to come):
| Subject | ir (to go) | vir (to come) |
|---|---|---|
| eu | vou | venho |
| você | vai | vem |
| ele / ela | vai | vem |
| nós | vamos | vimos |
| vocês | vão | vêm |
| eles / elas | vão | vêm |
- Eu vou para casa.I’m going home.
- Nós vamos à praia. We’re going to the beach.
- Eu venho de ônibus.I come by bus.
- Eles vêm amanhã.They’re coming tomorrow.
Notice vem (he / she comes) and vêm (they come): they sound the same, and only the accent tells them apart in writing.
Irregular -air verbs
Verbs ending in -air add an i in the eu form and an accent in the nós form:
| Subject | sair (to leave / go out) | cair (to fall) |
|---|---|---|
| eu | saio | caio |
| você | sai | cai |
| ele / ela | sai | cai |
| nós | saímos | caímos |
| vocês | saem | caem |
| eles / elas | saem | caem |
- Eu saio às 8h.I leave at 8.
- As folhas caem no outono. The leaves fall in autumn.
Irregular -uir verbs
Verbs ending in -uir end in -ui with você and ele / ela (not -ue), and take an accent in the nós form. Construir also changes its u to ó or o:
| Subject | distribuir (to distribute) | construir (to build) |
|---|---|---|
| eu | distribuo | construo |
| você | distribui | constrói |
| ele / ela | distribui | constrói |
| nós | distribuímos | construímos |
| vocês | distribuem | constroem |
| eles / elas | distribuem | constroem |
