Regular -er Verbs in the Present Tense
Como, come, comemos: how to conjugate regular -er verbs in the Portuguese present tense, the spelling changes to watch for, and exercises.
Samuel Virgo

In Portuguese, verbs in their basic form (the infinitive) end in -ar, -er or -ir. These are the three main groups of verbs:
- falarto speak (-ar)
- comerto eat (-er)
- abrirto open (-ir)
In this lesson, we’ll look at regular verbs ending in -er and how to use them in the present tense (presente do indicativo).
We use the present tense to talk about things that happen regularly, facts, and things happening now:
- Eu como arroz todos os dias.I eat rice every day.
- Ele bebe café pela manhã.He drinks coffee in the morning.
- Nós vivemos no Brasil. We live in Brazil.
How to conjugate regular -er verbs
To conjugate a regular -er verb in the present tense, take -er off the end of the verb and add the ending for the person doing the action. Here is comer (to eat):
| Subject | Ending | Comer (to eat) |
|---|---|---|
| eu (I) | -o | como |
| você (you) | -e | come |
| ele / ela (he / she) | -e | come |
| nós (we) | -emos | comemos |
| vocês (you, plural) | -em | comem |
| eles / elas (they) | -em | comem |
- Eu comoI eat
- Você comeYou eat
- Ele / Ela comeHe / She eats
- Nós comemosWe eat
- Vocês comemYou eat (plural)
- Eles / Elas comemThey eat
Notice that the endings of regular -er verbs are different from those of regular -ar verbs: ele come, but ele fala.
Some -er verbs change their spelling
Some -er verbs have a spelling change in the eu form. The endings are the regular ones, but the spelling of the stem changes:
| Infinitive | Eu form |
|---|---|
| conhecer (to know / meet) | conheço |
| esquecer (to forget) | esqueço |
| aquecer (to heat / warm up) | aqueço |
| parecer (to seem) | pareço |
| proteger (to protect) | protejo |
| erguer (to raise / lift) | ergo |
- Eu conheço o João.I know João.
- Eu esqueço os nomes.I forget names.
- Eu aqueço a comida.I heat the food.
- Eu pareço cansado.I seem tired.
- Eu protejo minha família.I protect my family.
- Eu ergo a mão.I raise my hand.
The spelling changes keep the pronunciation of the stem the same: conhecer is said with an “s” sound, so conheço is written with ç. Learn the eu forms as you meet these verbs.

The same pattern works for other regular -er verbs:

- Ela aprende português.She learns Portuguese. (aprender, to learn)
- Nós vendemos frutas. We sell fruit. (vender, to sell)
