The pretérito perfeito (pretérito perfeito simples do indicativo) is the past tense for actions and situations that happened and finished in the past.

  • Ontem, trabalhei das nove às seis.Yesterday, I worked from nine to six.
  • Na semana passada, ela escreveu um artigo interessante.Last week, she wrote an interesting article.
  • O ônibus para Curitiba já partiu. The bus to Curitiba has already left.

Regular verbs follow predictable patterns in this tense. The endings depend on whether the infinitive ends in -ar, -er or -ir.

How to conjugate regular verbs

Take off the infinitive ending and add the past-tense ending:

SubjectFalar (to speak)Comer (to eat)Abrir (to open)
eufaleicomiabri
vocêfaloucomeuabriu
ele / elafaloucomeuabriu
nósfalamoscomemosabrimos
vocêsfalaramcomeramabriram

  • Eu falei, comi, abriI spoke, ate, opened
  • Ela falou, comeu, abriuShe spoke, ate, opened
  • Nós falamos, comemos, abrimosWe spoke, ate, opened
  • Eles falaram, comeram, abriramThey spoke, ate, opened

In this tense, the eu form of regular -ar verbs ends in -ei (falei), and of regular -er and -ir verbs in -i (comi, abri).
