Regular -ir Verbs in the Present Tense
Abro, abre, abrimos: how to conjugate regular -ir verbs in the Portuguese present tense, the common verbs that change in the eu form, and exercises.
Samuel Virgo

In Portuguese, verbs in their basic form (the infinitive) end in -ar, -er or -ir. These are the three main groups of verbs:
- falarto speak (-ar)
- comerto eat (-er)
- abrirto open (-ir)
In this lesson, we’ll look at regular verbs ending in -ir and how to use them in the present tense (presente do indicativo).
We use the present tense to talk about things that happen regularly, facts, and things happening now:
- Eu abro a janela todos os dias.I open the window every day.
- Ela divide o almoço com o irmão.She shares lunch with her brother.
- Nós assistimos à televisão à noite. We watch television at night.
How to conjugate regular -ir verbs
To conjugate a regular -ir verb in the present tense, take -ir off the end of the verb and add the ending for the person doing the action. Here is abrir (to open):
| Subject | Ending | Abrir (to open) |
|---|---|---|
| eu (I) | -o | abro |
| você (you) | -e | abre |
| ele / ela (he / she) | -e | abre |
| nós (we) | -imos | abrimos |
| vocês (you, plural) | -em | abrem |
| eles / elas (they) | -em | abrem |
- Eu abroI open
- Você abreYou open
- Ele / Ela abreHe / She opens
- Nós abrimosWe open
- Vocês abremYou open (plural)
- Eles / Elas abremThey open
Notice that regular -ir verbs use -imos with nós, where regular -er verbs use -emos: nós abrimos, but nós comemos.
Some -ir verbs change in the present tense
Some common -ir verbs don’t follow the regular pattern exactly. Watch the eu form: the stem often changes there, and only there.
| Infinitive | Eu | Você |
|---|---|---|
| vestir (to wear / get dressed) | visto | veste |
| servir (to serve) | sirvo | serve |
| sentir (to feel) | sinto | sente |
| mentir (to lie) | minto | mente |
| preferir (to prefer) | prefiro | prefere |
| conseguir (to manage / be able to) | consigo | consegue |
| seguir (to follow) | sigo | segue |
| corrigir (to correct) | corrijo | corrige |
| dirigir (to drive) | dirijo | dirige |
- Eu visto uma camisa azul.I wear a blue shirt.
- Eu sinto frio.I feel cold.
- Eu prefiro café.I prefer coffee.
- Eu consigo fazer isso.I can do that.
- Eu dirijo até o trabalho.I drive to work.
These verbs are common in everyday Portuguese, so learn their forms as you meet them. You can practise them with our conjugation practice.
