Regular -ar Verbs in the Present Tense
Falo, fala, falamos: how to conjugate regular -ar verbs in the Portuguese present tense, with audio for every example and exercises to practise.
Samuel Virgo

In Portuguese, verbs in their basic form (the infinitive) end in -ar, -er or -ir. These are the three main groups of verbs:
- falarto speak (-ar)
- comerto eat (-er)
- abrirto open (-ir)
In this lesson, we’ll look at regular verbs ending in -ar and how to use them in the present tense (presente do indicativo).
We use the present tense to talk about things that happen regularly, facts, and things happening now:
- Eu moro em São Paulo.I live in São Paulo.
- Ela toma café da manhã às 8h.She has breakfast at 8 a.m.
- A Terra gira em volta do Sol.The Earth revolves around the Sun.
How to conjugate regular -ar verbs
To conjugate a regular -ar verb in the present tense, take -ar off the end of the verb and add the ending for the person doing the action. Here is falar (to speak):
| Subject | Ending | Falar (to speak) |
|---|---|---|
| eu (I) | -o | falo |
| você (you) | -a | fala |
| ele / ela (he / she) | -a | fala |
| nós (we) | -amos | falamos |
| vocês (you, plural) | -am | falam |
| eles / elas (they) | -am | falam |
- Eu faloI speak
- Você falaYou speak
- Ele / Ela falaHe / She speaks
- Nós falamosWe speak
- Vocês falamYou speak (plural)
- Eles / Elas falamThey speak
Notice that the ending changes depending on who is doing the action.
