The pretérito perfeito (pretérito perfeito simples do indicativo) is the past tense for actions and situations that happened and finished in the past.

  • Ontem, fui à praia.Yesterday, I went to the beach.
  • O filme foi bom.The film was good.
  • Ontem, tive muito trabalho.Yesterday, I had a lot of work.

The verbs ser, ir, estar and ter are irregular in this tense, so you need to learn their forms.

  • Você foi / esteve / teveYou were, went / you were / you had
  • Nós fomos / estivemos / tivemosWe were, went / we were / we had
  • Eles foram / estiveram / tiveramThey were, went / they were / they had

When do we use these verbs?

1. Ser: describing something in the past

Use ser to describe or judge an event or situation that is over.

  • O filme foi bom.The film was good.
  • A festa foi ótima. The party was great.
  • Foi uma viagem muito cansativa. It was a very tiring trip.

2. Ir: saying where you went

Use ir to say where someone went.

  • No fim de semana passado, fui à praia.Last weekend, I went to the beach.
  • Ontem à noite, eles foram ao cinema.Last night, they went to the cinema.
  • Ontem, fomos ao aniversário do Pedro.Yesterday, we went to Pedro’s birthday party.

3. Estar: a past state or whereabouts

Use estar to say how someone was, or where they were, for a while in the past.

  • No domingo passado, estive com meus amigos.Last Sunday, I spent time with my friends.
  • Na semana passada, estive doente.Last week, I was ill.
  • Ele esteve uma semana em Paraty. He spent a week in Paraty.

4. Ter: something you had

Use ter to talk about something you had or went through.

  • Ontem, tive muito trabalho no escritório.Yesterday, I had a lot of work at the office.
  • Tive gripe.I had the flu.
  • Ontem, não tive aulas.Yesterday, I didn’t have classes.

Putting it all together

See how the verbs work together, and how the present tense comes back when we talk about now:

  • Tenho aulas todos os dias, mas ontem não tive porque o professor foi ao médico.I have classes every day, but yesterday I didn’t, because the teacher went to the doctor.
  • Ontem, fomos ao aniversário do Pedro. A festa foi ótima.Yesterday, we went to Pedro’s birthday party. The party was great.
  • Ele esteve uma semana em Paraty. Foi a negócios. He spent a week in Paraty. He went on business.
  • Agora estou bem, não tenho mais febre. Now I’m fine; I don’t have a fever anymore.

The first three describe things that happened and finished; the last one is in the present tense, because it describes how things are now.
