The Portuguese verb ter usually means “to have”. We use it to talk about what we own, our family, our age, and some feelings and physical sensations.

Ter is irregular, so its forms don’t follow the usual patterns.

How to conjugate ter

Ter in the present tense
  • Eu tenhoI have
  • Você temYou have
  • Ele / Ela temHe / She has
  • Nós temosWe have
  • Vocês têmYou have (plural)
  • Eles / Elas têmThey have

Notice the difference between tem (singular) and têm (plural). They sound the same; only the accent shows the difference in writing.

When do we use ter?

1. Possessions

  • Eu tenho um apartamento.I have an apartment.
  • A Tânia tem um computador portátil.Tânia has a laptop.
  • O Raul não tem carro.Raul doesn’t have a car.

2. Family

  • Tenho dois irmãos.I have two siblings.
  • Minha irmã tem um filho. My sister has a son.

3. Age

In Portuguese, we use ter — not ser or estar — to say how old someone is. Literally, “I have 21 years”.

  • Eu tenho 21 anos.I’m 21 years old.
  • Ele tem 20 anos.He’s 20 years old.
  • Meu irmão tem 18 anos e minha irmã tem 15 anos.My brother is 18 and my sister is 15.

4. Describing people and things

  • A Sônia tem olhos azuis.Sônia has blue eyes.
  • Nossa casa tem seis cômodos. Our house has six rooms.
  • Nossa casa tem um grande quintal. Our house has a large backyard.

5. Sensations and feelings

Portuguese often uses ter + noun where English uses “to be” or “to feel” with an adjective:

  • Tenho fome.I’m hungry.
  • Ela tem frio.She’s cold.
  • Tenho calor.I’m hot.
  • Ela tem medo de ratos. She’s afraid of rats.
  • Nunca tenho fome de manhã.I’m never hungry in the morning.

For many of these you can also use estar com + noun (see The Verb Estar):

  • Estou com fome.I’m hungry.
  • Estou com frio.I’m cold.
  • Estou com calor.I’m hot.

6. Facts and circumstances

  • O Sr. Ramos tem muito trabalho no escritório.Mr Ramos has a lot of work at the office.
  • Eles têm muitos colegas na escola. They have lots of classmates at school.

You’ll also hear O que é que você tem? — “What’s wrong?” The meaning depends on the context:

  • — O que é que você tem?What’s wrong?
  • — Tenho calor. Abra a janela, por favor.I’m hot. Please open the window.
