In Portuguese, the verb estar means “to be”.

For example, “Estar no lugar certo, na hora certa” means “To be in the right place at the right time.”

Conjugating estar in the present tense

In English, “I am”, “you are” and “he is” are different forms of the same verb, “to be”. Portuguese works the same way: the form of estar changes depending on who you’re talking about. “I am” is eu estou, while “he is” is ele está.
