Estar + Gerund: What Are You Doing Right Now?
Estou falando, está comendo: how Portuguese says what’s happening right now with estar and the gerúndio, and how to form -ando, -endo and -indo.
Samuel Virgo

In English, we use to be + a verb ending in -ing for actions happening right now:
- “I am reading.”
- “She is eating.”
- “They are working.”
Portuguese uses a similar structure: estar + a verb ending in -ando, -endo or -indo.
- Eu estou lendo.I’m reading.
- Ela está comendo.She’s eating.
- Eles estão trabalhando.They’re working.
How to form the gerúndio
In their basic form (the infinitive), Portuguese verbs end in -ar, -er or -ir:
- falarto speak
- comerto eat
- abrirto open
To form the gerúndio, take off the -r at the end and add -ndo:
| Verb ending | New ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ar | -ando | falar → falando (speaking) |
| -er | -endo | comer → comendo (eating) |
| -ir | -indo | abrir → abrindo (opening) |
Then put the gerúndio after a form of estar to describe an action happening right now:
- Eu estou falando.I’m speaking.
- Ela está comendo.She’s eating.
- Ele está abrindo a porta. He’s opening the door.
